Porto de Galinhas, that means “Port of Chickens” in Portuguese, is situated about 60 km south from Recife, in the municipality of Ipojuca. The name has its origin in the late 19th century, when the “black ships” (which transported slaves from Africa to Brazil), due to restrictions imposed by the government to the slavery, looked for other places to harbor.
